Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse (with photos by David Lynch), Dark Night Of The Soul - Music Review

Dark Night Of The SoulDark Night Of The Soul is a collaboration between Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse (Mark Linkous) and a number of top-notch guest vocalists and, amazingly, features a book collection of original David Lynch photographs apparently inspired by and related to the music. With Iggy Pop, James Mercer of the Shins, Julian Casablancas of The Strokes, Scott Spillane of Neutral Milk Hotel, Frank Black of the Pixies, and members of The Flaming Lips (amongst others), Dark Night Of The Soul would be the album to hear this summer—if EMI allowed Danger Mouse to release it, that is. Due to ongoing legal disputes, Danger Mouse was forced to release a blank CD-R in place of the actual music; the CD-R reads “For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.” Fortunately, you can hear the album on the NPR website, and if you can find a torrent of the album and a blank CD-R somewhere, you’ll be all set. From a listen to the NPR site, I can tell you the haunting, smooth pop songs of Dark Night Of The Soul are most certainly not to be missed, and well worth whatever effort you need to go through to own them.
